Highlights

• In this year ́s O range Campaign , WFP’s efforts focus on the theme “ Leave No One Behind: End Gender - Based Violence ” , with attention given to the most under - served and marginalized people Throughout the 16 days there are a broad range of events.

• The presidential elections and delays in the processing of votes has caused political and social conflict in Honduras. Because of street demonstrations and road blockages the Government established a curfew. Since 30 November, the UN system activated the Business Continuity Plans (BCP).

• Honduras CO is in transition to the new CSP 20-2021.
A stock mapping and Landside Transport, Storage and Handling (LTSH) exercise is conducted until December

Operational Updates

• A Chile Cooperation Mission visited Honduras. The objective was to assess the results and lessons learned from the biofortified maize and bean crops project.
T his project is implemented in the municipality of Namasigue, province of Choluteca, and the smallholder farmers benefit from technical assistance on good agricultural practices.
The main results show not only a production increase of 68% for maize and 80% for beans , but also favourable results in the acceptance and consumption among beneficiaries .

• The Kerry Group Mission monitor ed the Milk Project in Honduras. The purpose of the project is to improve milk production and dairy processing practices in the Mancomunidad (association of multiple municipalities) of MANORCHO, province of Choluteca.

• The Program Unit conducted a n oversight mission in the Field Office of Comayagua. The purpose was to as sess th e implementation process and identify gaps, good practices and inputs to design a strategy for the new CSP 2018 - 2021.

Challenges

  • The high level of insecurity, migration, drug trafficking and corruption continue to affect the country ́s development efforts .

• WFP Honduras is facing a funding shortfall for the Country Program (C P ) in 2017 .
Currently, t he main contributions are from the private sector and multilateral donor s .

• The presidential elections and delays in the processing of votes has caused political and social conflict in Honduras.
Because of demonstration s , country wide road blockages and looting the Government established a curfew. Since 30 November, the UN system activated the Business Continuity Plans (BCP), and base d on daily situation, personnel can work from home. All staff are accounted for and continue to be attentive to COS - Honduras communications through radio checks and daily activation of the telephone communication chains . Due to the country ́s political situation, the CO is concern ed about the mental and emotional wellness of personnel and is looking for measures to address this.
