VIDEOS: Samsung Australia's first Healthcare Smart Summit, new clinical trial announced

By

Samsung is hosting its first annual Healthcare Smart Summit in Australia, "establishing its commitment to the development of innovative healthcare and wellness services for Australians through collaboration with software developers, healthcare providers and medical experts".

Samsung Australia's "sector-wide summit involving major healthcare organisations and solution partners in Sydney" is on for a day as I type, with "panel discussion and debate on important issues facing the sector".

We're told the purpose will be for Smart Summit participants to explore how technology can be applied to improving patient care, clinical care and wellness.

Steven Sherry, vice-president of business and enterprise mobility at Samsung Australia, said: “We strive to develop technology that improves the lives of Australians, and this is never more important than when it comes to health and wellbeing.

“We’re thrilled that through the Smart Summit we’re able to bring so many experts together, encouraging a culture of collaboration that will potentially help the healthcare community in Australia and around the world.”

At today's Smart Summit, Samsung is also announcing "a new clinical trial with the St Vincent’s Hospital Department of Pain Medicine and UNSW Art and Design. The trial will see patients take part in a clinical trial that will investigate virtual reality (VR) for acute pain management".

"The trial will use Samsung’s smartphones and Gear VR technology to evaluate their potential use as a treatment for acute pain. The study will also investigate potential side effects, cost-efficiency, toxicity, and ability to reduce risk of opioid dependency."

Associate Professor Anthony Schembri, chief executive of St Vincent's Health Network Sydney, said: "We’re thrilled to partner with Samsung on this innovative study,” said . “By harnessing the power of Samsung’s virtual reality technology, we’re proud to possibly uncover the potential of a pain management program that looks at new ways of helping our patients in their recovery.”

Keynote speakers at the Smart Summit include:

  • Danny Mandrides head of Sales, Enterprise and Small Medium Business Mobility Division at Samsung Australia.
  • Dr David Rhew, chief medical officer and head of Healthcare and Fitness at Samsung Electronics America.
  • Nick Dawson, Knox Strategy and Business Development at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s current healthcare partner solutions include:

Anyone interested in using IrisVision must consult their qualified medical professional before proceeding.
  • Breezie – a tablet solution designed for seniors that curates popular existing internet applications, content, and services, provides an online portal that family and caregivers can use to select services relevant to the user, and an interface that is designed to be radically simplified and personalised for the senior user.
