Hollywood on the Mississippi? La Crosse city council could help promote moviemaking in the state

Should Wisconsin try to attract more business from Hollywood?

Members of the city council in La Crosse are introducing a resolution to support bills in Madison that would create a Film Office for the state.

The proposal is sponsored by council members Rebecca Schwarz and Mackenzie Mindel, who back the idea of state tax incentives to attract film and TV production in Wisconsin.

Supporters argue that film productions can create local jobs and bring more spending to businesses in an area where filming is being done.

Members of the La Crosse Film Academy are urging council support, noting that Wisconsin is one of only three states that does not have such an office.

The full city council could discuss the idea next week.

This would be a mistake. Inviting hollywood to LaCrosse. To my knowledge no lasting good has come from any presence of the celebrity set. Further, my understanding of the movie business is that they look for handouts and freebies more often than being willing to pay for what they get.

Don’t want them here. Don’t want their money here. Don’t want their life style here. That is why I live here, they are not here!
