TRENTON — The first fully legal place to buy marijuana in the Capital City has opened its doors.

Theory Wellness, a Massachusetts-based dispensary company, has opened a medical cannabis dispensary on New York Ave.

One of the many vacant buildings in Trenton was completely redeveloped, along with adding parking space for customers and expanding green space around the area.

“The planning and development of this project spans several years, and we’re grateful to the city for their continued partnership in making this vision a reality,” said Brandon Pollock, CEO of Theory Wellness. “We’ve built a reputation on the East Coast by offering a very high level of service to our customers, and we are excited to bring our experience and hospitality to New Jersey.”

The company intends to expand to recreational sales “in the coming weeks” and has plans to contribute to the community as they grow.

“As part of its commitment to the city,” a press release from Theory Wellness said, “the company will be engaging locally with non-profits, including a generous annual donation to Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention programs, and will be supporting the city through added employment, tourism, and tax revenue.”

Theory’s community stewardship is a core part of the message it sent out about the opening.

“We take responsibility for the communities we operate in, and invest in their success,” Theory’s statement said.

Some of the initiatives it announced on day one are:

“1. Donating a minimum of $25K annually to non-profits

“2. Economic stimulus through job creation, increased tourism/stimulus to local businesses, state / municipal taxes and site beautification

“3. Further community action via local organizations, such as the NJ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the African American Chamber of Commerce, and the NJ Minority Chamber of Commerce for recruitment, professional networking, and employee outreach through job fairs”

While being based in Massachusetts, Theory Wellness also runs dispensaries in Main, New Hampshire, Vermont, and now New Jersey.
