More candidates are throwing their hats in the Baxter City Council ring.

These candidates-Connie Lyscio, Lori Rubin and Zach Tabatt-bring the grand total of challengers to five running for two council seats. Here is a quick rundown on each of them.

Connie Lyscio

Lyscio said she's running because she doesn't want to stop contributing and caring about her community-whether that's the health and wellness of Baxter, its fiscal health, economic health, infrastructure health or environmental health.

As a veteran of education after 31 years as a physical education teacher for the Brainerd School District, this is Lyscio's first run at public office. This was inspired, in part, Lyscio said, by a piece of advice former district Superintendent Bob Gross told her two years ago: "Connie, never stop caring."

"After 31 years, I know I want to stay in public service in some way," Lyscio told the Dispatch during a phone interview. "I would just like to continue the growth of Baxter."

In terms of public service, Lyscio boasts experience as a past board member for Brighter Days Foundation along with volunteer work for WeARE Clinic and Race for Grace. She is a member of The Journey North Community Church in Baxter. She has also worked with the Upward Bound Program through Central Lakes College.

Zach Tabatt

Tabatt said he's generally been satisfied with prior decisions by city leadership, though he looks to continue to foster the city in a way that's conducive for business and families alike.

Tabatt is the proprietor of a small financial planning practice and has no prior experience running for or working in public office.

"I see Baxter as a city north of the metro that has a pretty good reputation or outside view, it's a good place to come visit, it's a good place for schools," Tabatt said during a phone interview. "All of that combined, I'd just like to see good strong growth going forward and having it done responsibly."

Tabatt said areas of focus include the long-range planning for the city's future, economic development, an effective public safety team (police department, fire department and emergency medical services), expedient and improved sewer/water projects and infrastructure initiatives.
