The deadline to file your taxes or to request an extension has finally arrived. The April 17 deadline offered tax filers two extra days to finish.

The normal deadline of April 15 fell on a weekend and April 16 was a legal holiday in Washington, D.C.

There are multiple resources available in the Lowcountry for those seeking free last-minute assistance in getting those taxes completed.

The Internal Revenue Service has a site that allows you to find a provider near you.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify, according to the IRS.

Trident United Way and SC Thrive are two other local resources available at the last minute to help people file taxes for free.

Appointments are being accepted at the Berkeley and Dorchester Prosperity Centers through Tuesday.

The Berkeley Prosperity Center is located at 325 East Main Street in Moncks Corner. Appointments can be made by calling 843-796-6033.

The Dorchester Prosperity Center is located at 222 Old Trolley Road in Summerville. Call 843-282-6294 to make an appointment.

Those who make $65,000 or less per year as an individual may qualify for no cost tax preparation, according to Trident United Way. The cutoff point is $95,000 for those filing married/jointly. The free tax assistance offered by Trident United Way and SC Thrive also comes with basic financial wellness education.

SC Thrive has also provided an updated tax filing calendar. Free filing is available until April 26.

Many people require additional time to file taxes.

"If you file for an extension, your return is due October 15, 2018. Special rules may apply if you're in the military or live outside the U.S," according to the IRS.
