Gardaí believe the man shot dead in Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning was the victim of a feud among criminal gangs in the city - but could have been shot by one of his own associates.

Josh Itseli, who had addresses in Dublin and Meath, died after he was shot several times on Knocknarea Road, Drimnagh.

Gardaí continue to question three young men arrested near the scene wearing bulletproof vests.

One of them is a violent and dangerous criminal in his 20s who was charged with a serious offence five weeks ago and was out on bail.

He was also the victim of a recent attack and gardaí are investigating if he was seeking retaliation when the murder took place.

Gardaí say a stolen electric motorbike - a black Talari Sting - was seen in the area around Dolphin, Crumlin and Davitt Roads in Drimnagh around the time of the murder.

Gardaí seized the motorbike and are now trying to trace its owner.

The post mortem on the body of 20-year-old Mr Itseli has now been completed and has shown he died from gunshot wounds after he was shot several times.

Mr Itseli was before the courts on drugs charges after he had been caught dealing cocaine last year.

Gardaí were today carrying out searches at the scene of the first gangland murder this year.

They are still trying to determine the series of chaotic events that led to the fatal shooting during which automatic gunfire echoed across a normally quiet residential Dublin suburb.

One line of inquiry is that he was part of a gang on the way to carry out an attack when they were intercepted and ambushed by other criminals.

Mr Itseli was in one of two cars - a black Mercedes and a black Volkswagen Golf - that crashed at the scene in what detectives suspect could have been part of a double cross.

A third car - a silver Ford Focus - was also found nearby. They have all now been removed from the scene.

A bullet hole on the window of a nearby community centre from one of the stray bullets has been taped up today but still bears testimony to the recklessness of the gun attack.

The firearm and a pipe bomb which the Army bomb disposal team made safe are now being forensically examined.

A military grade AR-15 assault rifle was found by gardaí

Today officers searched the area, including the grounds and hedges of a daycare centre, for other evidence in connection with the murder including bullets, masks, gloves and potentially other firearms.

Gardaí have recovered a military grade AR-15 assault rifle disposed by the gunman fleeing the scene.

Detectives here also believe a number of others were involved in the gun attack and are now trying to identify a number of people who fled the scene after the murder.

Gardaí have said that following technical examinations, all crime scenes connected to the murder have now been lifted and all roads have reopened.

A number of cars have also been seized and taken to a garda storage facility for a forensic examination.
